183 WWUS86 KPQR 161955 SABOR SUMMARY BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE STATEMENT FOR THE MT HOOD AREA NORTHWEST WEATHER AND AVALANCHE CENTER SEATTLE WASHINGTON 100 PM PDT FRI MAY 16 2008 This statement applies to back country avalanche terrain below 7000 feet and does not apply to highways or operating ski areas. ORZ011-181900- && ...AVALANCHE WARNING CONTINUING FRIDAY AND SATURDAY... A major change in the weather pattern is underway over the Northwest. This is causing sunny hot weather that began Thursday and should continue through the weekend. This hot weather is expected to cause a widespread spring avalanche cycle in the Olympics and Cascades. Deep avalanches are possible. Large wet snow avalanches may travel very fast and run long distances, possibly to lower elevations where little or no snow cover may remain or to valley floors. We do not recommend back country travel near any avalanche terrain Friday and Saturday and possibly Sunday. This statement will be updated as conditions warrant. && Backcountry travelers should be aware that elevation and geographic distinctions are approximate and that a transition zone between dangers exists. Remember there are avalanche safe areas in the mountains during all levels of avalanche danger. Contact local authorities in your area of interest for further information. NWAC weather data and forecasts are also available by calling 206-526-6677 for Washington, 503-808-2400 for the Mt Hood area, or by visiting our Web site at www.nwac.us.
